Climate Protection Planner: Accounting tool for more than 2,200 municipalities

Over 2,200 municipalities in Germany, Eastern Belgium, and Austria use the Climate Protection Planner (KSP) from Climate Alliance and akaryon for monitoring local climate protection efforts.

Also of interest for research

The Climate Protection Planner is also utilized in research. As part of a new study, the internationally renowned Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) drew on, among other things, anonymized municipal data from the Climate Protection Planner to analyze strategies for reducing carbon emissions and mitigating urban heat islands:

Reitemeyer Fabian, Ribeiro Fabiano L., Schwarz Jan, Gugel Benjamin, Schacht Alexander & Rybski, Diego (2025). Minimizing urban carbon emissions and heat island intensity: A theoretical study. PLOS ONE, September 3, 2025. https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0330079

One of the reasons the research team chose the tool for their work: In Germany, the Climate Protection Planner is the most frequently used instrument for creating emission inventories at the municipal level. The study results are thus highly comparable with practical data. (cf. Reitemeyer et al. 2025)
