Made Visible: Actors in the Covenant of Mayors, Their Progress, and What Percentage of the Population Benefits from the Measures

A new tool from the Covenant of Mayors (CoM) for Climate & Energy is online:

The Community Explorer, an interactive map, visualizes the commitment of European cities and regions to climate protection, climate change adaptation, and combating energy poverty. The intuitive tool pulls data in near real-time from MyCovenant, the official energy and CO2 reporting and monitoring platform of the CoM community.

More Than National Averages: Comparative Analysis by Zooming to the Regional Level

As an accessible entry point for in-depth analysis, the Community Explorer offers…

• … an overview of all municipalities participating in the CoM, including submitted action plans and monitoring reports.
• Country profiles are visualized—with statistics whose granularity extends to the regional level (NUTS-2). These are also downloadable.
• This allows for comparing implementation progress within a country.
• The CoM-munity Stories—a feature that has been around for a while—present practical examples of local climate action measures.

From Data to Change: Support for European Environmental, Economic, and Social Policy

The Community Explorer…

• … provides valuable insights for key policy analyses, such as for the country reports within the European Semester, the EU framework for monitoring economic and social policies.
• It supports funding decisions for a resilient, climate-neutral future.
• To foster synergies, it is linked with other EU initiatives such as the Mission for Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities or the Green City Accord.

akaryon’s Contribution to the Covenant of Mayors Community Explorer

Since 2020, akaryon has been responsible for the web presence of the Covenant of Mayors Europe on behalf of the EU Directorates-General for Energy and Climate.

In this context, I have already co-developed the digital portal for networking European mayors for the energy transition. Part of this is the aforementioned reporting and monitoring platform MyCovenant. In recent years, the portal has continuously received new features, such as the CoM-munity stories map.

In 2025, I will be working particularly intensively with Alexander on the new features of the Covenant of Mayors Community Explorer.
